Sankarankovil is a Beautiful Historical old town in Thirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the must visit places in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the oldest towns in India and has a historical significance. The biggest attraction of the town is the temple and it is more than 1000 years old.

It is located 33 Kms south of Rajapalayam and 53 Kms NorthWest of Thirunelveli and about 40 kms east of Western ghat Hills. There are two State high ways passing through Sankarankovil. Road SH41 is Noth South connecting Rajapalayam and Thirunelveli and Road SH76 is East West connecting Puliankudi and Kovilpatti. The town is part of Tirunelveli  Kattabomman district. It is the capital of Sankarankovil taluk. The town has other names like SNKL, Sangai.

Sankarankovil Railway station is on the Chennai Egmore –Sengottai line.   Pothigai Express is the daily service that connects Chennai with Sankarankovil. The train starts in Chennai at 2050 hours passing through Trichy (0235 Hours), Madurai (0525 Hours) and reaching Sankarankovil at 0740 Hours.

Nearest Junction is at Kovilpatti located on the Chennai Central – Trivandrum line offering connectivity to rest of India through express trains through out the day.

You will find moderate traffic on the Rajapalayam to Thirunelveli stretch road.But it is smooth driving with lot of green on either side.The Road cuts through villages and is lined with trees on either side.
